Diana Tobien & Ángel Rubio

ethnic jazz duo

A musical journey into a world of contrasts – subtle, sensitive, and yet spirited and energetic. Deeply routed in traditions of different cultures, both musicians converge creatively and innovatively to an inspiring, flexibel, and surprisingly symbiotic sound. However, despite of all this energy, their music remains one thing above all: very personal.

Diana Tobien: vocals, piano, melodica, percussion
Ángel Rubio: guitar, vocals, kalimba

Angel Rubio studied classical guitar at the Madrid Conservatory and flamenco guitar with Migúel de Córdoba. At the age of 18 he began his professional career as a jazz musician with the band Madera Jazz, considered by critics as one of the best and most creative jazz groups in Spain. He practised many different styles, from jazz standards, free jazz and contemporary jazz to jazz rock fusion, flamenco jazz fusion and finally world music with the band Black Market. His discography includes more than 20 records, mostly originals. He won 3 composition prizes, 2 in Spain and one in Luxembourg. In 1993 he was voted best jazz guitarist in Spain by the jazz magazine Quartica Jazz. His engagements have taken him all over the world, including countries like Morocco, Syria, Argentina, Mexico and Cuba. He has performed with Maria Joao, Joachim Kühn, Paul Stocker and others and played with Madeira Jazz as support band for Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Wayne Shorter and the Art Ensemble of Chicago.
